Maropeng, as the sponsor of the National Geographic Kids magazine’s Young Conservationists Competition, is encouraging children to think about their environment and the impact that they have on it.

The aim of this competition is to inspire kids to be passionate about their planet and to come up with ways in which they can make a difference to the world. It hopes to highlight the importance of taking care of the environment so that future generations will be able to enjoy it.

The competition is open to children of 14 years and under. To enter, they need to write a motivational letter detailing the contribution they’ve made to looking after our precious planet.

Maropeng’s Marketing Manager, Erica Saunders, says, “One of the main themes in the exhibition at the Maropeng Visitor Centre is how we as humans are making an impact on our planet. We are therefore very proud to play our part in encouraging the next generation to be more aware of our environment and sensitive to this impact.”

The best entry will win a family holiday at any SANParks national park as well as the chance to guest edit the October 2009 NG Kids Environmental Issue.

It’s not only the winner who will walk away with fantastic prizes. The three competition finalists and first 20 entrants will each receive a Family Wildcard which will allow them entry into national parks for a year.

NG Kids editor and judge Fiona Thomson says, “This is the perfect opportunity for eco-smart kids to show their commitment to protecting and preserving the environment they live in. We look forward to receiving high-calibre entries from our young environmentalists.”

Competition details can be found in the June issue or on the NG Kids website, http://www.ngkids.co.za. Entries open on May 27 and close on June 30, 2009.
