The new Absa Premiership trophy was unveiled yesterday by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at a glitzy function hosted at Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind.

A statement released by the PSL said they had chosen Maropeng as the venue for this prestigious and important event because of its evolutionary theme.

”The theme of the function made reference to the evolution of football and hence the evolution of the Absa Premiership trophy,” said the statement.

Maropeng is fast becoming the venue of choice for launches and unveilings, having recently hosted the launch of the new Gauteng Provincial Government logo and the unveiling of the two-sediba fossils.

Maropeng Managing Director Tony Rubin said, “We are very happy to have hosted the PSL event, which marks an important date on the South African football calendar. Soccer in our country is continually evolving and what better place for the evolution to continue than at the Cradle of Humankind, where human evolution is rooted.”

Absa Chief Marketing and Communication Officer Happy Ntshingila said Absa was excited to be leading football into a new phase.
“The new trophy represents our excitement about the new era of football,” he said. “Through the Absa Premiership we continue to provide the platform to develop and polish the finest soccer talent we have.”

Following its unveiling, the trophy will be paraded around major cities in South Africa. The first city to be visited will be Cape Town during the week of August 23 where the trophy’s tour will coincide with the first ‘Friday Night Football’ matches on the PSL calendar. On 27 August Cape Town Stadium will be hosting double-header Absa Premiership action between newcomers Vasco da Gamma and Orlando Pirates, followed by Ajax Cape Town versus Bloemfontein Celtic. The premiership season will conclude on the weekend of 21 May 2011.
