Maropeng honours Madiba by lighting a candle by his handprints

Staff members at Maropeng are today mourning the passing of South Africa’s former president, Nelson Mandela.

"Our South African flag is flying at half mast, and we’ve lit a candle in the Maropeng exhibition by Nelson Mandela’s handprints," says Maropeng managing director Tony Rubin.

"One of my most memorable moments was standing in protest in front of South Africa House in 1981, along with hundreds of other political activists, demanding the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

"Although he never came to Maropeng, over the years I met Mr Mandela at various places and I’ve got fond memories of him. He was a special man, who went out of his way to greet people and make them feel noticed," he adds.

Maropeng’s head of communications, Lindsay Marshall, suggests honouring Mr Mandela’s memory by living our lives according to what he stood for.

"Today more than ever, the quote that is on display at the exit of the Maropeng exhibition rings true. Like Madiba said, 'It is in your hands to make a difference,'" she adds.
