The sun has produced energy for billions of years. Solar energy is the sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reach the earth.

South Africa is a land of sunshine – so why don’t we use this free energy to replace the energy we pay for in our homes?

Harry the Hominid, Maropeng’s spokeshominid, offers some advantages of solar energy.

1) Solar energy can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity.

2) We usually use solar energy in two ways

     a) To generate electricity by catching the rays of the sun in solar panels which convert the sun energy into electricity. This electricity is stored in batteries

          until it is used

     b) To heat water – water is stored in tubes which are mounted in a sunny spot – like on the roof of a house. The water heats up from the rays of the sun,and is

then stored in a geyser for us to use when needed.

3) Solar energy represents the largest potential source of energy that exists at present. Once installed, solar systems need no attention, maintenance or fuel,

     and can last almost definetly.

4) Solar energy has enough power to supply the earth 1000 times a day.

5) Solar energy is free, and its supplies are unlimited.

6) Using solar energy produces no air or water pollution.
