Fantastic festive season events and specials at Maropeng

  • February 17, 2011

“As the festive season begins, Maropeng is bringing more fun to the party with some exciting specials to celebrate our fifth birthday,” says Maropeng General Manager, Erica Jago.
From December 1 to 12, all tickets for Maropeng will be sold at the 2005 rate. Families can enjoy the exhibition at a reduced cost of R65 per adult, R35 per child and R50 per pensioner. This discounted rate is 30% or more off the usual price.

If visitors choose to celebrate their own birthday at Maropeng, they’ll be treated to a free dessert at the Tumulus Restaurant , provided their special day falls within the first 12 days of December, says Ms Jago.

Guests can spoil a loved one by booking a luxurious getaway at the award-winning Maropeng Boutique Hotel at the reduced rate of only R940 per adult per night sharing, including dinner, bed and breakfast. Tickets can be booked online.

Maropeng has added extra dates to the popular Cooper’s Cave picnics, where you can spend the day out with your family at this fossil site exploring the cave and learning how to make stone tools. Tickets can be booked online for the following dates:

• December 15, 2010
• December 22, 2010
• December 29, 2010
• January 5, 2011

For an adventure of the astrological kind, star-lovers young and old will love StarLab, a portable, inflatable planetarium that will be on show from December 11 until January 9. Daily StarLab sessions take place at 11h00, 12h00 and 14h00. Tickets for the 45-minute “journey” cost R25 per person, says Ms Jago. Tickets can be booked online.

“If visitors don’t feel like spending Christmas Day slaving away in the kitchen, Maropeng is offering you the opportunity to indulge without having to lift a finger,” says Maropeng Head Chef Peter Langa.

This Christmas Day, Maropeng has two decadent lunches on offer. Enjoy a buffet lunch with an array of delicious starters, main courses and desserts at the Tumulus Restaurant, or tantalise the taste buds with a festive fine-dining experience at the Maropeng Boutique Hotel. Tickets can be booked online

Maropeng has put together a range of packages for companies looking to treat their staff to a memorable year-end function. The Maropeng Boutique Hotel and Tumulus building offer the ideal venue combination for corporate year-end functions.

Meet “Fred” at the new fossil display

Maropeng has launched its fifth birthday celebration with a fascinating new fossil display. “Treasures of our past” features dinosaur eggs, micro-fossils, hominid fossils and the almost-complete skeleton of “Fred”, a 260-million-year-old Tapinocaninus pamelaea, the oldest land-living reptile.

The display celebrates the role of the Wits University-based Bernard Price Institute and the Institute for Human Evolution in palaeontological research in Southern Africa.

According to Maropeng exhibitions curator Lindsay Marshall, this display is not to be missed: “It has something for everyone and it allows people to be exposed to different areas of research; for instance families can bring their children, who are not sure of what they want to study after school.”
