In October, students from Vuyani Mawethu Secondary School in Stilfontein were given the opportunity to learn more about their ancestors and heritage at Maropeng’s Cradle of Humankind.

Vuyani Mawethu is one of the schools in Maropeng’s Education programme. The education trust, made possible by contributions from the Cradle of Humankind and Steffunti Stocks, sponsors groups of children, mostly from disadvantaged schools, to visit Maropeng.

The students were accompanied by the head of their school’s Natural Science department, Grade 10 teacher Mrs Molete. She was impressed by the fossil display and felt that it was of value for the learners, who are studying evolution as part of their school curriculum.

Student Sbongile Ngobeni said the visit to Maropeng was memorable. “It was my first time coming here. I enjoyed the boat ride and my best moment was when I saw the ice.”

Mrs Molete added: “The presentation and the tour guide were terrific, especially since the learners were exposed personally for the first time to the fossils. We will definitely be coming again.”
