Education trust sponsors Tsoaranang Primary School visit to Maropeng
This November, the Maropeng Education programme has given learners from Tsoaranang Primary School in Sharpeville the opportunity to learn about their origins and heritage.
The education trust – made possible by contributions from Steffunti Stocks – sponsors groups of children, mostly from disadvantaged schools, to visit Maropeng.
The teachers and learners from Tsoaranang were impressed by what they saw on their visit.
The trip proved to be especially valuable for Grade Six and Seven social sciences teacher Renette Nthongoa. “As a teacher I didn’t know how to go about teaching evolution, but with the help of Maropeng and the tour, I now have a better idea,” she says. “Visiting Maropeng has made me proud to be a South African.”
The learners found the boat ride particularly exciting and were keen to learn more about their ancestors. “You have to be interested in our ancestors to want to find out more,” says Pono Mokoena, a young Tsoaranang learner. “I now realise that there are many things I did not know about.”
