Thinking Aloud is a lecture series that Maropeng introduced last year to shed light on, and promote conversations around, issues that have gripped the public’s interest. In our first edition we invited experts to share their knowledge on climate change, vultures and South Africa’s military history. In the second, we took a closer look at cannabis.

The controversial subject has drawn much attention and debate in South Africa, particularly in light of a recent decision by the Western Cape High Court. The Thinking Aloud lecture at Maropeng, called “Cannabis: a gateway to sickness or health?”, took place on 25 November, with experts on the subject sharing their insights and views on marijuana use.

Maropeng managing director Michael Worsnip says the lecture series is meant to allow thinkers to come together to learn more about a subject, to share their views and to hear the views of others. Watch the video below to find out more.

Many of those who attended the lecture said they were curious about the issues surrounding cannabis in South Africa.

The self-styled “Dagga Couple”, who have mounted a court challenge to get the private use of cannabis legalised, were among our speakers on the day.

We’re looking forward to exploring other compelling topics in the Thinking Aloud series. Keep an eye on our website and social media channels to hear about forthcoming topics.
