Maropeng has supported Maloney’s Eye Primary School for several years – partnering with Flow Communications, Cathy Findlay Public Relations, Southern Spoor and chairman of the Charity Dad’s Challenge Rob Jackson – to help make a difference in the lives of the learners.

The learners come from poverty-stricken homes, and for most their only source of food is at school, which is why there was so much excitement among both the students and teachers this week, when the children were given hampers of food and basic hygiene products.

Grade R teacher Goitsemang said: “I’m always happy when these children receive something, because they come from homes where they have almost nothing. Their parents are also always very thankful for the gifts their children receive from Maropeng.”

The learners were soon tucking into the sweets in their goodie bags.

Everyone was kept entertained with creative gumboot dancing, and traditional Tswana songs and dances.

Pastor Thapelo Marais, of St Peter’s Preparatory School in Johannesburg, said a few words of motivation, advising the learners to always be grateful for the opportunities they have been given, and to always work hard at everything they do.

“There is no one, but yourself, who will push you to do more,” he said.

Learners from Grade R through to Grade 7, who had worked very hard throughout the year, were also given special gifts to reward them for their achievements.

Maropeng’s education and marketing executive, Magel van de Venter, says it was an enriching day for everyone, and has given her heartfelt thanks to the generous sponsors.

“Personally I love to see the joy and excitement of the learners while receiving the Pick and Pay hampers as well as the gifts we have prepared for them. Then all the effort of getting sponsors and discounted rates is absolutely worth it!” she says.

“The learners are close to my heart and I wish we could be of more assistance to them. They are so grateful and never take things for granted. I wish them all a very happy Christmas and trust we will see each other in 2015. I would like to thank all the sponsors and donors who made this event a super event and create memorable experiences for the learners. Thanks for making the difference.”
