It’s been more than four decades since the United Nations established World Environment Day on 5 June.

The decision was made at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972, which was held in Stockholm and represented one of the first attempts by world governments to collectively understand the effects that humans were having on the planet.

According to the Eberhard Deutsch Professor of Public International Law at Tulane University, Günther Handl, quoted in the United Nations’ Audiovisual Library of International Law: “Stockholm represented a first taking stock of the global human impact on the environment, an attempt at forging a basic common outlook on how to address the challenge of preserving and enhancing the human environment.”

Forty-three years later, the United Nations Environment Programme has asked the world to rally around a theme that speaks to sustainable development: “Seven billion dreams. One planet. Consume with Care.

In South Africa, the UN is launching its first-ever project on food waste in Africa called Think.Eat.Save.

As a Fair Trade Tourism destination, every day is #WorldEnvironmentDay at Maropeng. We’re also spreading the word about sustainability in our exhibition
