Tony Rubin holds the Best Overall Tourism Establishment in the West Rand award

Maropeng took top honours at the sixth annual West Rand Tourism Awards. Held on 27 June, the awards recognised Maropeng as the Best Overall Tourism Establishment in 2013.

Maropeng also scooped gold for Best Educational Tourism Experience, Best Eco Tourism Establishment and Best Meeting, Incentive and Conferencing Venue.

Beverly Makopo, from the Sterkfontein Caves, won gold in the Best Site Guide category.

In addition, Maropeng was awarded silver in the Best 4 Star Lodge category and was a finalist in the Sustained Achievement Award.

Gauteng Tourism Authority CEO Dawn Robertson said the awards recognise those establishments that offer exceptional service and value for money.

“We want to encourage local tourism and also promote the area as an international tourism destination," she said.

The event this year, under the theme “a greener West Rand”, attracted more than 200 industry leaders and signatories, with keynote addresses by Gauteng Economic Development MEC Nkosiphendule Kolisile and Robertson.

Other dignitaries included the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) Economic Development MMC Cllr Elvis Mphithikezi, acting WRDM Executive Mayor Cllr Khaya Blaai, and WRDM Municipal Manager David Mokoena.

Mokoena's key message was that role-players need to work together to maximise tourism potential, and grow the West Rand node. He also highlighted the industry’s potential to create employment, and appealed to all product owners to encourage training and development of young people employed in their establishments.

The Maropeng team, flying high

Earlier this month, Maropeng was awarded the 2013 Best Large Business in the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure category by the West Rand Chamber of Business & Tourism.

“We are very proud and pleased that our hard work and effort has been recognised, and we hope to continue making a contribution and will endeavour to keep improving our quality and services at the facility,” says Maropeng managing director Tony Rubin.
