June festivities at Maropeng

  • June 03, 2014

Come rain or shine, here at Maropeng we don’t shy away from a romantic night of stargazing or a celebration of some sort.

Here’s our itinerary this June:

Cooper’s Cave picnic and tour: 7 June 2014

A walking tour of fossils and ancient rocks by tour leader Dr Christine Steininger, a palaeobiologist for the Palaeosciences Centre at the University of the Witwatersrand, will broaden your knowledge of fascinating research that has been conducted at Cooper's Cave. A picnic rounds off your visit.

Important to note: prams are not recommended, unless they are suitable for outdoor or uneven terrain. Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a jersey, torch, hat, sunscreen and camera.

You can also combine your tour with a stay at the Maropeng Hotel. Please email Mmathabo Maine or call +27 (0)14 577 9000 to make a reservation.

Costs: R375 per adult and R150 for children (4-14 years); includes the tour and a light picnic lunch
Time: 09h00
Venue: Guests are to meet at the Sterkfontein Caves, where Dr Steininger will present an introduction before proceeding to Cooper's Cave

Father’s Day lunch: 15 June 2014

We have prepared an afternoon fit for a king this Father’s Day.

You know the special man in your life quite well, so which one of these options will grab his attention: a fabulous lunch at the Tumulus Restaurant, or a five-course brandy pairing lunch at the Maropeng Hotel?

The lunch at the Tumulus Restaurant will be served buffet-style, so dad can pick out his favourites – and have seconds, too! The cost is R225 per person, R105 for children (5 to 12) and R60 for the kiddies’ menu. For more information, please email Mmathabo Maine. Click here to book now.

If he is a brandy lover, then the Maropeng Hotel is where the family should be headed this Father’s Day. With five fine brandies to sample, a delectable five-course lunch prepared by Maropeng’s head chef Peter Langa, and impressive brandy knowledge by Cape Legend’s Jonathan Perrin, it’s an event not to be missed.

Costs for this special lunch are R375 per person for the five-course paired menu. The cost is R100 for persons under 18 years, and R300 for the designated driver.

The evening begins with welcome drinks and the stargazing presentation, dinner follows and thereafter the fun begins.

The illustrated dinner talk is a general look at the science of astronomy, presented by Vincent Nettmann.

Please note the stargazing event is subject to weather conditions but the talks and dinner will still take place. Guests will receive the itinerary via SMS the day before the event.
