Nearly a year after Maropeng received its Fair Trade Tourism certification, visitors can rest assured that we are still living up to the required standards.

“Visitors to the Cradle of Humankind, who prioritise sustainable tourism and travel, can be assured of our status as a Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) entity across the board – whether they are visiting Maropeng, exploring the Sterkfontein Caves, staying over at our boutique Maropeng Hotel or teaching kids in Maropeng’s learning centre,” says Tony Rubin, Maropeng’s managing director.

How does Maropeng live up to FTT standards?

Maropeng works constantly to maintain a great relationship with its staff

One of the reasons that Maropeng received FTT status is that we offer fair wages and good working conditions to our staff. “A key focus for Maropeng is the training and upskilling of staff. We are always on the lookout for staff who demonstrate the will, talent and commitment to further their careers at Maropeng,” says Rubin.

Maropeng believes in practising what it preaches

Maropeng’s commitment to practise what it preaches motivates us to be involved in eco-friendly projects. We use biodegradable packaging and eating utensils, rechargeable torch batteries and low-energy lighting; our conference notepads and pencils are made from recycled materials; and we have a variety of preservation efforts to protect indigenous fauna and flora in the area. Maropeng also follows ethical business practices. “The sustainable management of this unique heritage site is a clear priority if it is to be preserved for future generations,” says Rubin.

Maropeng is committed to giving back

Maropeng has been involved in several upliftment projects, including planting a food garden for Maloney’s Eye School. Maropeng also uses recycled material to feed its own garden and assist Maloney’s with feed for theirs. Maropeng strives to not only do things more sustainably, but also give back to the communities in which we operate. Maropeng supports local farmers as well as business initiatives.

Maropeng is committed to preserving nature

Over the past year, Maropeng has been involved in a vast number of campaigns that promote environmental awareness. Just a few days ago, Maropeng’s ambassador, Harry the Hominid, shared tips on how to turn children’s birthday parties into eco-friendly events.
