Guests enjoy a tour of the Swartkrans dig

Maropeng is offering guests a unique opportunity to explore an active palaeontological dig with expert scientist Morris Sutton.

On September 18, 2010 the public will have the opportunity to explore Swartkrans, one of the Cradle of Humankind’s richest fossil sites.

Though Swartkrans is usually closed to the public, small groups on Maropeng’s Swartkrans walking tours have the opportunity to observe an active palaeontological dig and be guided around the site by Sutton, who is excavating the site.

Swartkrans, which has yielded the largest sample of Paranthropus robustus, contains evidence of the earliest use of controlled fire in Southern Africa, dating back 1-million years.

The walking tour costs R350 per person and includes a sumptuous picnic in the shade of the indigenous trees near the site.
