  • April 02, 2013

Maropeng - the Official Visitors’ Centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site – is the ideal destination for all, whether guests are looking for a getaway to just relax and enjoy the fresh air, or an exhilarating adventure back into pre-historic times. A mere 45 minute drive from either Johannesburg or Pretoria, it offers fun, interactive and educational events on a monthly basis.

4 May: Our deep skies

Two thirds of all the stars we can see from Earth are concentrated in the southern region of the sky. On a perfect moonless evening, our large telescopes reveal the delicate structures of far away objects such as the sparkling stars in the colourful “Jewel Box” cluster. Observe massive clouds of dust and gas in the Eta-Carina nebula- a birth place of stars, see over 3 million stars in the brightest of the globular clusters - Omega Centauri. Join Maropeng’s resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann, for an informative dinner talk, illustrated with spectacular astro-photo images. Bring your binoculars with to participate on an after dinner laser guided star tour and large aperture telescopic star-gazing, subject to weather conditions. The event is suitable for adults only and starts at 18:00 at the Maropeng Hotel.

Guests are also able to combine the event with an overnight stay at the luxurious Maropeng Hotel for a special rate, which includes bed and breakfast. Guests are advised to dress warmly.
