More than 1000 mountain bikers enjoyed 80km of gruelling trails in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site during the Cradle Cycle Festival on April 12 and 13 2014.

The course started and finished at Maropeng, the official visitors' centre of the Cradle of Humankind.

“There were lots of riders,” said Maropeng's Lindsay Marshall, who was at the event. “It was a challenging course and people looked very satisfied when they'd completed it.

“It was wonderful to see so many people at the event, and I think there's huge potential for mountain biking in this area growing even further,” she added.

Although the Cradle Festival has been going for a few years, “This is the first time it focused around cycling,” explained Marshall. “The cycling community is very vibrant, so let's hope this event goes from strength to strength in the future,” she said.

She thanked all the sponsors, and especially the Cradle of Humankind Management Authority and Gauteng Tourism, who “had a big role to play in this”, she said.
