We have had so many complaints from people about the inadequate signage on the road to Maropeng, so we’re collecting signatures to petition the relevant government authorities for more signs. Please add your name here to help us.

Because there were no signs, we drove around for more than 2 hours before we finally arrived. We asked people by the road, but many didn't know where we had to go. Because we had to go to the airport later that day, we had very little time to visit the caves. I hope you will get enough sigs for the petition. 158	Jan 30, 2009	Michelle Snaddon	Almost a year ago, I got lost getting to the caves. I sent an email with a constructive suggestions for all the unclear areas on two different access routes. I am a travel editor of an international travel website and recently visited again with my children and was appalled that the signage had not changed. As a result, I cannot recommend a self-drive option to my international clients which means that the area is losing out on foreign income. In addition to the Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng experience (which is absolutely world class), I would recommend accommodation in the area, suggest a balloon safari, as well as a meal at Roots. In this case the road signage to Maropeng appears to be the weakest link. Hence the millions of Rand in capital invested in tourism facilities in the area will go to waste just because the government/provincial authorities is too short sighted/lazy/incompetent to spend a couple of thousand Rand on signage!!

Unlimited signage educates local rural villagers in the facilities that welcome and serve the needs of foreign visitors. This will inspire local folks to activate their entrepreneurial skills and set up informal kiosks to serve self-guided visitors. Lack of signage causes foreigners to feel unsure and nervous, and more likely to put themselves into the hands of multinational tourist trappers. This prevents small local entrepreneurs from havin g access to these travellers. While you're waiting for "government" to put up the signage, encourage locals to put up their own signs. South Africa needs more signs EVERYWHERE!! Just do it :)

929	Mar 31, 2009	Joy Morrison	Two of us from USA visited in January 2006 and spent hours in the dark trying to find the entrance to the Maropeng complex. We had reservations in the hotel and because it was dark, we very nearly gave up and returned to Johannesburg. Admittedly the complex was quite new then, and the road signs had not yet caught up but this is NO way to treat visitors. I recommend the word Maropeng on every approproate road sign from Oliver Tambo airport!!

No shops on the Lanseria Road seemed to know of it, let along how to find it. The B&B;we stayed in was not much better informed. Perhaps you should market it to the people around you so they can act as ambassadors.
