Maropeng has featured prominently in local and national media recently. The dramatic building that houses the visitor centre has caught the attention of many location scouts, and most recently formed the backdrop for a photoshoot with local musician Lira in an Audi Magazine spread.

Atlas of world architecture features Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves visitor centres

The Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves visitor centres are both featured in the first edition of the Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture, published in 2008.

The Phaidon Atlas includes details of 1037 of the world’s most outstanding, unusual and remarkable works of architecture, built since January 2000.

Maropeng and Wits University’s Origins Centre have been the focus of international press coverage recently, with the release of a syndicated Associated Press article about the wealth of paleoanthropological information and sites in the area.

Maropeng celebrates 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth on February 12, 2009, Maropeng will be holding a poster exhibition entitled Darwin, Origins and Africa, in conjunction with the Institute of Human Origins and the Origins Centre at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Darwin’s theory of evolution – that all organisms adapt and evolve or alternatively die out through a process he called “natural selection” – is one of the most influential scientific theories of all time, and remains the basis for modern biology.

Maropeng releases online Sterkfontein Exhibition Guide

Maropeng is pleased to announce the publication of the new Sterkfontein guide on our website.

The Sterkfontein online exhibition guide complements the displays in the visitor centre at the Sterkfontein Caves. The displays here focus on the geology of cave formation and how fossils are preserved and extracted, and on the amazing finds of hominid fossils in the Sterkfontein Caves, the Cradle of Humankind’s most famous fossil site.

Gauteng talk radio station Radio 702 broadcasted live from Maropeng on Friday morning, bringing the history of humankind to hundreds of thousands of Gauteng listeners of the John Robbie Show.
