Young waiter with a big smile – Dominic Tshepiso Tshelane

At just 21, Dominic Tshepiso Tshelane is the youngest member of staff at Maropeng. He was employed in August, 2008, as a banqueting waiter.

He started working on the very same day he got his job and isn’t bashful about just how well he performed on his first day: “I was perfect!”

Dominic says he decided Maropeng was the place for him after seeing it on TV and in newspapers: “I thought, that’s the place I want to be, because you can see so many different celebrities.” The celeb he’s spotted most recently? Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Dominic is an integral member of Maropeng’s food and beverages division. He is mainly involved in catering for conferences, but also helps out at the hotel and the marketplace, where the Maropeng Shop, a fast food outlet and several other stores are situated, from time to time.

When he talks about his job, Dominic oozes zeal: “Whatever I do, I do with passion.” He especially loves the boat ride at Maropeng and says he often spends his lunch break or free time in the exhibition space: “I can spend 15 minutes, half an hour, down there, just reading something interesting.”

Dominic says he’s learnt a lot of things in his job, especially the importance of of teamwork. “Wherever I am, I try to make people happy. I like to tell jokes; I like people to smile.”
