Tour guides in tough competition at Indaba

Maropeng’s Reuben Tsime retains his focus on becoming South Africa’s top tourist site guide
There was dismay in the Maropeng ranks when tour guide, Reuben Tsime, wasn’t called to the winners’ podium at the Welcome Awards in the hotly contested tour guide category, but he’s not about to give up the fight.
Having recently won the provincial round, Reuben was in the running for the national award, but was pipped at the post at last night’s ceremony held during the Tourism Indaba at the Durban International Convention Centre.
“I’m very disappointed not to have won the award, but I will continue working towards becoming number one,” said a determined Reuben.
Next year Reuben will have a tougher time staying ahead of the pack, as he will be joined by three Maropeng colleagues who have become fully accredited tour guides following a two-year training period.
According to Maropeng Operations Manager Zanomsa Zozi, Maropeng Ramalepa, Steven Motshaba and Collen Tshegang are hot on Reuben’s heels.
“The experience has been good for Reuben and he’s still in contention for next year,” said Zanomsa.
“With three of his colleagues vying for the honours, 2011 promises to be a highly competitive year for Maropeng”!
