New kitchen for Maloney’s Eye rural school

Work has begun on a new kitchen for Maloney’s Eye rural primary school after the official sod turning ceremony took place on November 30, 2011, attended by sponsors Maropeng and the Dad’s Charity Challenge.

The kitchen is valued at R100 000 and a builder from the rural community has been sourced to assist in the project. Over the last two years, Maropeng has developed a special relationship with the school and the community, donating almost R810 000 in food and infrastructure.

“A number of our staff come from the Maloney’s Eye community or even attended the school so it is a project which is very close to our hearts and our staff enthusiastically support the community whenever they can,” says Tony Rubin, managing director of Maropeng.

The Dad’s Charity Challenge was started in 2005 by several fathers wanting to make a difference. Each year they cycle from Joburg to Durban to raise money for charity. They have identified the Maloney’s Eye school as one of the beneficiaries of this event and have also established a partnership with Pick n Pay whereby the school is provided with fresh produce on a weekly basis to supplement daily meals.

“We are delighted to be part of this worthy project and it’s always great to see all the money from our fundraising event put into action where it is needed most,” says Rob Jackson, chairman of the Dad’s Charity Challenge.
