Maropeng staff recognised for five years of outstanding service

December 2010 marks Maropeng’s fifth birthday, and this heritage landmark certainly has much to celebrate. The past five years have seen the Maropeng Visitor Centre grow into an award-winning tourist attraction, with a staff compliment that serves as an essential ingredient in Maropeng’s recipe for success.

Recently the staff members who’ve been with Maropeng for five years were recognised and awarded long service awards. Managing Director of Maropeng Tony Rubin says that this is something to be proud of: “The first five years have been a very exciting time for Maropeng - most especially because in this time we engaged in a skills training programme with many previously unemployed people from the local area. The fact that we have recently awarded 38 people with awards for five years of service is amazing.”

Maropeng Boutique Hotel Guest Relations Manager Gabisile Mbatha was one of the staff members who received an award. She began working at Maropeng as a cashier in the marketplace, then became a receptionist at the hotel after it opened in 2006. Gabisile says that it felt awesome to receive an award. She added “Maropeng really gives us opportunities so it’s exciting thinking of what we can achieve.”

Over the past five years Maropeng has received more than 15 accolades for quality service and top tour guides, the most prestigious of which was the title for best attraction at the 2008 South Africa Tourism Welcome Awards.

From December 1 to 12, families are urged to take advantage of the 2005 ticket prices. Families can enjoy the exhibition at a reduced cost of R65 per adult, R35 per child and R50 per pensioner. This discounted rate is at least 30% off the usual cost. Enjoy a free dessert at the Tumulus Restaurant if your birthday falls within the first 12 days of December.
