Malapa fossils on National Geographic Live

December 7, 2011 – Bianca Bothma

The fossils discovered at the Malapa Cave site in the Cradle of Humankind have been making headlines for the past two years.

The fossils of Australopithecus sediba, which were discovered at the site, have received much attention for being a new species of Australopithecus. What has also been remarkable about this discovery is the modern-day technology used to locate the fossil site and publish findings in such a short time.

The following video, which is part of the National Geographic Live lecture series, shows Professor Lee Berger, lead researcher on the Malapa project, explaining how Google Earth, hand-held GPS and other technology systems were used to make the discovery.
