Happy birthday Madiba, from Maloney’s Eye Rural Primary School in the Cradle of Humankind
Children in the Cradle of Humankind celebrated the birthday of former South African president Nelson Mandela today with singing and a delicious lunch of boerewors rolls. The celebration took place at the opening of a new kitchen built for the Maloney’s Eye Rural Primary School by sponsors Maropeng and Dad’s Charity Challenge.
The school feeds almost 300 learners a day, and the new kitchen is just what the school needed as staff previously prepared lunch in a classroom.
The fact that the kitchen was opened on Mandela’s 94th birthday teaches the learners an important lesson, says school principal Christine Masibi: “We have taught our learners that Nelson Mandela is a man who tried to bring the people of South Africa together. He embraces us all as his children, and that’s why we felt that the kitchen must be opened on his birthday day, to honour him.
“We sang for him with the children so that they can see from him that we don’t bear grudges; we must learn to forgive to bring the nation together in South Africa.”
