Experience adventure in the Sterkfontein Caves
January 20, 2012 – Mildred Thabane
The Sterkfontein Caves are home to some of the most amazing paleontological fossil finds in the Cradle of Humankind – “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot” – and a visit to these caves is nothing short of an adventure.
Meeting: the World, a web TV programme that showcases the world’s most culturally diverse destinations, visited the caves recently to document an exciting adventure in this video.
Visiting the caves is not for the faint-hearted; to see the stalagmites and stalactites, as well as the elephant chamber, underground lake and the site where famous fossils were discovered, you have to go 60m underground where the temperature is a constant 18°C.
There are also 125 steps to climb before you reach narrow passageways that will require you to bend and crawl as you manoeuvre yourself through them. This can be a little claustrophobic for some people.
But after all this you can enjoy the most amazing views from the Maropeng Hotel.
For a more in-depth tour of the caves, you can book the Bone Detectives tour guided by young and up-coming scientist Brendon Billings and one of Maropeng’s accredited tour guides.
