Discover the stories and science behind the stars at Maropeng
December 21, 2010
Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered about the lights you see above you, about the belt named after an ancient hunter or how sailors could chart their way by looking for the Southern Cross?
This festive season, come to Maropeng to discover the stories and science behind the stars.
StarLab, a portable, inflatable planetarium on loan from the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), gives children of all ages the opportunity to learn more about astronomy, and will be at the visitor centre from December 11, 2010 until January 9, 2011.
This planetarium projects the night sky above the heads of visitors, and Maropeng’s resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann, will be on hand to explain more of the make-up and history of the southern stars.
Daily sessions are at 11h00, 12h00 and 14h00 and tickets for the 45-minute StarLab journey are R25 per person. Bookings can be made in advance.
