Joseph Sello may be a somewhat diminutive man, but his personality jumps out at you. He’s one of Maropeng’s dedicated handymen, and has been working at the tourist attraction since August, 2007. He was given the job just a week after being interviewed, a fact that Sello, who was born in Carletonville, clearly still takes pleasure in: “I was a lucky guy!”

Joseph is a staunch family man, having tied the knot in February, 2009, and is the proud father of a young daughter with his new wife. He is quick to show you a photograph of the little girl, which he’s made the background image on his cell phone. He’s also a man of God, and is currently training to be a preacher.

Working at Maropeng makes Joseph a happy man; he calls it a home, and says, “I can speak to everyone here. I like people to laugh with me here, and be happy.”

Joseph Sello aspires to go from resident handyman to Safety Officer at Maropeng

Joseph says his job as Maropeng’s handyman keeps him busy: “I fix everything! Tables, wall cracks, machines. I do wall painting and also some work around the hotel.”

What does he hope to achieve in the future? “I’ll be happy if my department improves, and one day I want to be a Safety Officer.” Joseph has already completed First Aid and Safety courses, so it seems he may be well on his way.

Joseph’s greatest delight in working at Maropeng is the people he gets to interact with on a daily basis: “I meet a lot of foreigners, and we are all the same. Some people are from lots of different countries; I get to hear so many languages!”
