The one thing that’s irresistible to most women is chocolate, and that’s how we plan to start and end Woman’s Day, here at Maropeng. Upon arrival, bubbly will be served and guests can anticipate a beautifully set dessert table adorned with various decadent chocolates, made with local ingredients, giving you a delicious yet proudly South African experience.

Maropeng is hosting a special lunch this August, commemorating Women’s Day and celebrating all mothers, sisters and daughters, for their strength, sacrifices and love.

After the chocolate-filled dessert and some mingling, guests will be seated at the Maropeng Hotel restaurant for a light lunch of Asian-style kingklip or chicken supreme – grilled chicken fillet served with apple and walnut risotto, indulged with smoked paprika sauce – with a hint of pineapple and lime salsa or smoked paprika sauce.

The lunch will be followed by a talk titled “Dirt and Makeup: Maintaining your Femininity in a Man’s World” from our guest speaker Christine Steininger, the project director of Cooper’s Cave and the only woman in South Africa to hold a permit for an active dig.

The not-so-glamorous side of palaeoanthropology involves dust, dirt and mud and yet our guest speaker, Christine Steininger somehow manages to maintain her femininity. Christine will give us a woman’s insight into the world of palaeoanthropology, and will talk about how she mantains her identity and femininity in a profession dominated by men.

She’s reached the top of her game and going for more by studying toward a PhD in palaeoanthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand. 

Coffee will be served after the talk and if the first dose of the chocolate dessert didn’t satisfy you, stick around for more.
